Daughter of the Pharisees

I am a daughter of the Pharisees

They have invented a religion unto themselves.

It has a logic like iron bars.

It has a law like a labyrinth,

inescapable, vast, every time I think

I have escaped it, I make a turn and

there it is, scything my steps.

I am the daughter of the Pharaoh

The shock of discovery is still fresh:

That there is a child in the river,

that it is not a sign of joy in Pharaoh’s kingdom,

but one slender escape from a cruel order

imposed by ruthless men who are frightened inside.

What can I do but take the child, kiss and feed it,

and hope that one day it will bring down the walls around us.

The god I have worshiped is a false god,

but there is a god who flows

like blood through my veins,

like milk through my breasts,

slips through iron bars like secret nourishment

to Mary. So small, so ordinary, it passes

unnoticed by the Pharisees,

leaves the Pharaoh unimpressed

So divine, so potent, it creates within my ribcage

gardens upon gardens of the blessed.
